Diversity definitions.
Equality, Diversity, Prejudice, Stereotype, Discrimination... These are words that you are likely to have come across, and perhaps you feel that you have a good understanding of what they are about.
The bottom line.
Equality laws in the UK
The first equality laws came into being in the 1970s as a result of greater understanding of the reality and impact of race and sex discrimination, and with the aim of maintaining principles and traditions of fairness, respect, tolerance and acceptance in the UK.

Most people acknowledge that they have stereotypes and prejudices. But it's important to go one step further - to think about why this is the case, to understand where our feelings and views come from, and to make sure that we don't put prejudice into practice...

At university or college we need to be sure that our language and behaviour demonstrate respect for others.

What is the course about?
This course is about the importance of fairness and respect at university, and about how we can all benefit from being positive about peoples' differences. It is organised in units that cover:
- The importance of diversity for students
- Diversity definitions
- Laws on equality
- Awareness of your own background and experiences
- Acceptable and unacceptable language and behaviour
- Meeting people who are different
- Equality and diversity at work
When you have completed this course you will:
- Understand how people are different and how these differences can affect life and study for all students
- Know what UK law says about equality and discrimination
- Have thought about your own views, values and experiences in relation to people who are different to you
- Understand what types of behaviour are respectful and what your responsibilities on equality and diversity are at university
- Recognise the importance of equality and diversity to your career or in your future workplace
